I am looking for a decent layout idea for a multiple train operation. Does any one have an idea. Also how do set the power for such a layout?
Well, I guess that depends on your definition of “multiple train operation.” If you are looking for two or more trains running without any operator input, then you will either need 2 complete loops, or some amount of sensing and control circuitry. If each train is actively controlled by someone, then you can simplify things a bit. Another thing to consider is whether you are planning on DC or DCC operation. With DC, your wiring needs to support multi-block operation to keep the trains separated. With DCC, you can run a large number of trains independently on the same track block.
I’ve personally set up a relatively small layout with two loops, one “down under” for running subway trains, and the other at surface level. I am using DCC. I can just start trains running in either direction on both loops and watch them without touching a thing, or I can add a third train running between the other two under active control. If I had someone else running with me, we could each have an active train so there would be 4 trains we’d have to co-ordinate.
Thomas,
How big of a layout space do you have to work with? Are you interested in running your trains independently of one another?
If you are just starting out, may I suggest looking into DCC (Digital Command Control). With DCC, you can run two or more trains independently of one another…on the SAME track…going in DIFFERENT directions…at DIFFERENT speeds. If that is to your liking then I would suggest you go to the following web site and read more about it:
On the home page there is a link entitled 2. DCC For Beginners. Click on the link. You can either read it online or download it onto your computer as a .pdf file. It’s a great resource and will help you understand that DCC is and what it can do. Here’s the direct link:

DC still works and is fine, too, but it takes more wiring, swtiches, and connectors and you end up running your layout more than running your trains.
Hope that helps…
Tom
I am just getting into the hobby and am building a 3 1/2 x 7ft modified scenic ridge kit where I added an addtional outside loop main line for two train operation and a few extra switching areas… I used all Kato UniTrak. I have a dual control MRC Tech 280 transformer and my loops are wired for either single throttle operation or dual throttle using some dpdt switches and some strategic insulated unijoiners… Here is a link to an image of it in XTrkCad: http://home.comcast.net/~pasayten/scenic_ridge_mod_switchyard_elev.gif
Good Luck!
