I am “retracking” the un-finished portion of the On30 Pacific Coast Air Line Railway with handlaid track replacing the HO Atlas Code 100 track. I have am chronicling the adventure at:
On30 is really fun. It can be more than that silly “dark side” stuff espoused on some forums. The Bachmann On30 equipment allows 1/4 scale narrow gauge accessible to everyone. On30’s main feature is the equipment allows one to model something other than D&RGW in Colorado. O scale narrow gauge used to be geared to that area, imagine everyone modeling the Pennsy in 1945 and that was the only equipment and only gospel. Not that there is anything wrong with the Pennsy. It opens new areas of the country. The Bachmann On30 equipment is accurate narrow gauge models running on HO track. Larger scale scenery is so much more fun that HO scenery. Visit:
So what happened to the “one true scale” of Sn3 (or Sn30?) that you were promoting just recently? It was perfect in all aspects when compared to anything, seemed that you were writing off On30 because a few modelers said some unkind things about what you were doing.
You make one tongue in cheek, exaggerated comment to generate enthusiasm for the idea and it follows you for the rest of your days. “S” is still a great size. But just have a minor health problem and one is reminded that we are all “racing the reaper”. I don’t have the time and energy to pursue the construction required in a minority gauge. On30 offers enough RTR equipment so that I can pursue more layout construction. If all that is available today in HO to convert to Sn3.5 were available twenty years ago I would be still be following that area. It is hard to believe how crappy model trains were in the mid-1980’s.
If I was really worried about all the dimwits I have found when I rolled over rocks in the hobby with my articles I would have shut down the website. After posting over 100 pictures in the turnout article the only line any one remembers is:
“So don’t e-mail me about using India Ink/Alcohol, etc. I have moved away from that method for weathered wood. If you have any new thoughts please email me those.”
Someone immediately comments why have I stopped using I/A for weathered wood and I wonder why I publish web articles.

PS. One of the reasons I got back into On30 is one of the nice people I met through the website asked if there were going to be any more On30 articles. It is nice that some people are supportive.
Larger scale scenery and equipment is much easier to work with than HO. I thought you switched Sn42. Oh well, you’re like me in that we’re both dyed-in-the-wool rubber gaugers. I’m now doing G and Gn15 modeling in addition to On30. Can’t have just one.
