LAYOUT BASE

I WANT TO USE FOAMCORE FOR MY BASE. IS THIS ACCEPTABLE

When I think of foam core, I think of mounting photographs, etc on something about 1/4" thick. If that’s the case, I would be very selective how I used it. For example, I can’t imagine it holding up much weight, bridging between joists. So as far as a real base, I would have to say not acceptable with the products I’ve used.

I’ve used it as part of a structure kitbash or for a part of or the backdrop.

Did quick search. Found: foamcoreheaven.com This site sell Gatorfoam board; a much stronger and durable product. Comes in sheets of various sizes and thicknesses from 3/16" to 3" thick! 4’ by 8’ sheets only ship in multi-pack quantity[4 or 4 sheets, as far as I could see] and must ship via truck. Am now very interested meself and may experiment with it to see if thicker types would work on 12" layout frame crossmember spacing w/o sag. Hope this ws helpful. TTFN…Old Tom in NH

This is the type of foam we use at work. The outside surface is almost like a very stiff cardboard & the foam inside is a little less dense than the pink or blue foam you would get at the BORG. While it wouldn’t sag between the joists, with the face/outside being so harder than what you are used to you wouldn’t be able to cut it as easily with just a knife.

Michael6792: “…get at the BORG.” What is a BORG? Thanks.

Sorry, that would be “Big Orange Retail Giant”

Wikipedia: "Lowe’s is the second-largest hardware chain in the U.S. behind The Home Depot and ahead of Menards."

Big Box Store = Borg = You will be assimilated - You will comply - Resistance is futile!

When you say foamboard, give us an example of exactly what you’re talking about.

The most common foam used is the pink of blue foamboard found at Lowes or Home Depot.

Thanks, I didn’t make the Star Trek connection. Clever.
