Layout Challenge

I have secured the funds and space to finally expand from a small 4x6 HO scale layout. Here is the space I have to work with.

Specifications:
Atlas code 83 flextrack
Min #8 switch on mainline, #6 elsewhere
Min 28" radius
Min 2 1/4" track centres
Min height 40", max 60"
Min 6" between levels
Max 2.5% grade, preferably only for in between levels, if necessary
At least 30’ staging yard, preferably multiple one ended tracks
No duckunders
Must not block both entrances (4’ and 7’ sections on right side of plan)
Integrated workbench with spur off mainline
Point to point double track running with option of other possibilities

Lets see if anyone can think of anything, I will post my ideas when they come up.

Thanks!

Welcome to the forum. That is a nice large space. If you also have 10 years, you can make one of the great layouts. The planning, however, is very complicated to get what you want. There are many here who are good at planning nice, rather simple mid size layouts. If what you want is a grand railroad, you will need to do a lot of study and planning. Keep us posted.

We currently have a 6 inch plywood surface planned with generous 30 inch loops at either side of the basement, but I would be delighted to see what others would do. [:)]

So much depends on era, roadname

These dictate your scenery and inudstries.

The industries are limited by availible models and your scratchbuilding skills.

The industries dictate your track requirements.

Your track requirements are your layout.

My suggestion is to research–a lot. Come up with a purpose for the layout and build to meet the purpose. You’re about to drop a chunck of change and large part of your life. Don’t trust us to guess your needs. Do the homework and get it right.

You have only one chance to plan.

Those seem a bit incongruous.

Track centers seem wide for straights, Maybe in the corners with 28" & 30.25" curves.

#8 seem like enormous turnouts for use with 28" curves. What equipment do you have that will go around a 28" radius curve but not a #6 turnout?
