Layout Construction Starts, the Santa Fe Howard Branch.

Well, I though after moving back to Colorado from Ohio, my idea of a home layout would be gone at the least until I moved into my own home. Well after talking to the monarch I got permission to use the old tool shed as a layout space. The shed got a nice revamp, a new window, wall paneling and electricity.

I decided to drop my original fictional branchline idea and pursue this instead.

Here’s the new home of my layout.

the newly paneled interior. The dartboard is being moved to the back wall because there’s not enough throwing room.

about 30 1x3’s purchased for benchwork.

The layout will occupy a 8x12 space and I have chosen the Santa Fe’s Howard branch in HO scale to model. (http://atsfrr.net/resources/Sandifer/Howard/index.htm for all the info I’ll ever need).

My Givens and Druthers.
-The layout will be set in the 1970’s
-the only modeled portion will be from Olpe to Eureka
-50’ boxcars and 4 axle diesels the norm’, 54’ grain hoppers are about the longest thing that will be present. Small 6 axle diesels (RSD15’s and SD24’s) for limestone trains.
-Passenger service provided by the Santa Fe with a doodlebug and combines on some locals.
-MRC Prodigy Express DCC system (2.0 amps)
-an absolute minimum radius of 18" with listed speed restrictions, otherwise 22" minim

Nice to have your own dedicated space, BUT… Is your shed insulated? Heated? Environment can effect a layout. Heat, cold, dampness and dryness can all do unpleasant things to a layout.

Good luck,

Richard

yes sir it’s insulated. we did that when we put up the new walls. the rolls of insulation that remain are for the ceiling. I have a ceramic heater for the winter and a Fan/Mini-AC for the summer. I don’t think humidity is a factor out here on the plains of Colorado, it rarely gets over 15% and when it even reaches that point we all call it humid.
