layout dust

I,ve enjoyed the great photos of train layouts & collections on open shelves, my question is how do they keep dust from collecting ?

If that’s possible I want to know … LOL . Does everyone know over 50% of so called dust is dead skin from humans … yucky … but true !

I don’t have much of a dust problem. If you do a search of the site, I know this has been discussed before. I know that Chief has a air purifyer that he has had a lot of success with.
If you have central AC, you would be well served to change filters often. You can also spray pledge on your trains and wipe it off (but be careful. I found this tip in a “Tips and Tricks” article, but be cautious of damaging finish/decals), but this should help keep dust off them. With regard to removing dust, you can carefully use canned air or compressed air and then a shop vac. Just watch fragile parts of your layout and trains.

Bionic Breeze. Works. Still going to get dust but that sure cuts down on the amount.

Bionic Breeze–it’s alive!

I heard about one modeler who mounted a centrifugal blower in a box sized to take two furnace filters, one on each side. He ran it anytime somebody was present in the layout space.

i use the dust remover in a can and it come with a plastic pipe from Office Depot its used to clean keyborads an other computer things.I find it handy to use when cleaning black steam Locomotives and black freight cars.It also comes in handy to clean in tight spaces for example between rails and other tight spaces. The only other thing I would say is have the layout in a ac controled room to keep the dust down too.

I bought a small kit to attach to your shop vac. I think I got it at Walmart for under $10. It has very small attachments that get into the nooks and grannies to get the dust out. I usually do this over the summer when it get to hot outside and a day over the dead of winter.

Bob, you’re a naughty boy!

More to the point, Consumer Reports magazine has repeatedly down-rated the “Ionic Breeze” line of air purifiers sold by Sharper Image. (I presume that’s what the chief is talking about above.) Sharper Image sued Consumer Reports. Sharper Image lost. There is good reason to believe that there are much more effective air purification devices out there, and that Ionic Breeze costs far too much for the questionable benefits it provides. See link for an inkling. There’s much more to be found where that came from. Spend your money wisely.

Hi! I had started a thread that may be of interest. Search this forum under traindaddy1 “Dust” dated 4/23/2006 There were some great replies.

Chief … that’s what my son told me … he has one … not an ionic breeze … a lower priced model … and said you would’nt believe the crap it catches and how much .
