I am about, 2 months from now in starting to build a new layout,(my 2nd one) The first layout I built is finished, and I’m not happy with it so I decided to take the first one down, and start all over again. I see everyone asking for advice on this forum about this, that, and the other thing. My question is; Has anyone ever ask for anybody to come to their house to help them design and build a layout ? The reason I have to wait 2 months to start taking my layout down is, because it is going to be featured in MRR mag. and I have to wait for the photo-shoot.
If we lived closer together, I’d be at your house in an instant to help!
There are plenty of instances where modelers have gotten together to help build a layout (or tear one down, for that matter!). Model railroading is a friendly hobby.
A word of caution is advised. Know who you are inviting into your home. The invitee may not be a real model railroader, just a thief looking for a victim. Meet with potential helpers somewhere outside the home. A LHS is good neutral territory. An offer to visit the helper’s layout would be nice.
It is sad that I have to mention that. I’ve found model railroaders to be not only friendly but also, for the most part, trustworthy. There are exceptions, but few and far between.
Good luck. Having knowledgable helpers makes the process even more fun.
Hi Darrell, I hear you on the trust part as to who one invites to their home.I would first have to get to know the person, and get to know a little about his back round. I know that model railroaders are 98% trustworthy the other 2% are not REAL model railroaders. If someone invites somebody to their house to help they would have to live near by. I am a loner as far model RR goes, and none of my close friends are into model RR.So hopefully, when the time comes, I’m sure some great Model RR’s will come out of the woodwork to lend a hand. I think that’s a great way to make new friends.
If your layout is going to be in MR, seems to me you should be the one giving advice!! [:)]
I notice in a lot of MR/RMC etc. articles on layouts that the builder often notes he had help designing and building the layout - take the new N scale layout building series in MR for example.
