Layout Help!!

I am trying to come up with an N scale plan that would approximatley be 10x10 “L” shaped layout in a spare bedroom. I have looked at working with an existing plan, but have not found one that works for me. I am trying to avoid duckunders; I would much prefer a walk in type layout. Before I go to pencil and paper, my druthers are: operations oriented with staging and option for contunious running (my kids). I plan modern midwestern theme, raidus large enough to handle 6 axle locos. This is my second layout, the first on a door with a published plan. I woul much prefer a published plan due to my relative inexperience in the “layout planning” department. My fortee is scenery and detailing, not planning. Any suggestions for resources on walk in layout plans would be appreciated!!

There are (on the Web,MRR mags, etc) a lot of interesting layout plans that could easily be adapted to special dimensions, sometimes by simply lengthening a few tracks. However, shrinking a layout plan is much more complicated as curves, for instance, may need to be reduced to a point that they’re not practical. My suggestion is that you try to find a layout plan that you like and enlarge it to suit you needs.Another thing possible is taking a 20 ft. linear layout plan and bend it to make your L shaped 10X10.Just an idea…

Hey John,

I’m no expert but I’ll throw a few things out there anyway. 10x10 for N scale is a real nice amount of room for a layout. The problem of working with an existing plan is it’s not your vision as I’m sure you already know. Had that problem myself.

You mentioned an “L” shaped layout. If it’s a walk around could you have it on 3 walls with a small peninsula from the middle? Which I understand is no longer an “L” but a “U” so that may not be what you are looking for right off the bat.

Any closets in the spare bedroom that restrict your design? Or anything else that may be in the way. That would fall under your givens.

I would have to research some 10x10 plans, off the top of my head I don’t recall any sites, hopefully someone else will. There are a few people here that have helped me along the way so this is a good place to ask.

thanks for the suggestions; the bedroom is actually 14x11. i plan on using the closet for storage and a small workbench. the reason for the “L” or “U” is to keep the entry open for my three kids’ thomas stuff. around the walls enclosed presents too many problems. i thought of an extended dogbone style, but i was hoping to remove some of the math and geometry by going with an established plan, which i could then modify.

John, try http://www.thortrains.net/ for some more ideas. About 1/2 down the page are the N scale plans.
