Layout How finished are you?

I know all stages of layout construction are fun but I am just curious, if you were to rate your layout as TOTALLY FINISHED, where are you on a scale of 1 to 10?

Even though mine looks nearly complete there are many details to finish and tie up other projects on the layout.

Also maybe how many layouts have you actually TOTALLY FINISHED?

For me NONE. I have always started over before one is completed.

Mike

I’d say ours was finished.

But then over the years you see things that can be improved and well one thing leads to another and now I’m far from finished.

Went from a 10 to a 6 I’d say.

Compare these photos (from finished to work in progress):

On a scale of one to ten (ten being the best) mine is probably a 2 or 2-. Track is down and running on the lower level with DCC. Very little scenery. I’ve been building HO modules, N-Trak modules and T-Trak modules which has been taking up much of my time. Losing 30 pounds over three months also used up a lot of time. Hopfully this winter i’ll be able to get some work done.

I am about halfway. The bench work is done, track is laid, have wiring am scenery to complete. I guess I am at number 5 on your scale.

I’d say about 70% finished. Some areas have more work than others to be called “finished”. Of course, some of the areas need to be redone since my expectations have changed in the past year. I imagine that last 30% will take as long as the first 70!

im probably a little bit less then half done

Well, that all depends,I am now in the process of DE- constructing my layout…

SO about a 3. Trackwork is all that is left. That will be taken up and stored as was all the buildings and RR cars and locos.

Then there is the “under the Christmas tree layout”. It is newer and bigger. It is about a one. It was supposed to be painted white outside so it could dry well and free of odors inthe LR., for a winter scene, this summer. but other things got in the way. ALso hte “edges” {trimwork moldings} was supposed to be tacked on. Maybe now that summer is over, I can get that done. Medical issues have stopped me dead in my tracks.

Benchwork is a 5, everything else goes down from there to visible track and rough scenery, which are zero.

Finished? You ARE kidding, right. (With apologies to Bob Heinlein) TANSTAAFL!

There Aint No Such Thing As A Finished Layout!.

Once I get started Slate Creek should be up and running in 3 days. The “finish” part maybe 7-8 months or when I cry “enough details!”

Guess I am at a 10! Reason? I am wanting to rip it out and start over so I guess I am finished! [:-^]

Good question, Mike.

I started this layout in 2004, my first, and got it to about a 9 in 2008. Today, I’d rate it about 9.5.

Always subject to change and improvement. DJ.

In round numbers, I’d put mine at about 3.14.

Oh boy, Labor Day. This is my model railroad season. I have been working on my new layout for 2 layout seasons. My layout season is from Labor Day to Memorial Day. On Memorial Day I put the tools away and clean the train room. The only thing I do on the layout during the summer months is just run the trains for about a 1/2 hour or so a week, just to keep the track clean and locos lubed. I also use the summer months to stock up on modeling supplies for the next season, because when Labor Day comes around I like to have most of my supplies on hand so I can spend about 4 or 5 hours a day on the layout. I like to take my good old time, working on a scene because I like a lot of fine detail… Well like I said this is only my 2nd season, and although most of my track is down except I will have cut more turnouts in as I go along. There is only one little corner of my layout done. So to answer your question! How finished am I on a scale from 1 to 10. I guess I have to say 2 ?

A scene from my 1st layout that was never finished. Thanks Sam

I have finished one, then got bored and started expanding it into another room, then we had a contract on the house so it had to come down.

I have since started another one. This one is at a 5, maybe a little further, but not a 6. All bench work and track is done and scenery has started.

Just about started…basic benchwork is mostly done,I’m now refining the trackplan (the Xth time) and should start installing the foam in a near future.Been at it for the last four years but fighting a cancer has sidelined me for over a year, taking my energy and motivation away for a while. The layout became a backbencher then but doc says I should be a lucky one and pull out of it,so interest is coming back.I’d rate it at about 1.

Started 7 years ago, finished it in 3 weeks, a LOT of work, haven’t added one new thing in 7 years or bought one more item (didn’t need it, and it wouldn’t fit anyway) and thoroughly enjoy the hobby, it keeps me sane, may do an addition if I get the energy. I have lots of room as I don’t have boxes and boxes of unfinished kits, I only buy on a need basis.

About 75% I’d say. Trying to drag it out and make it last as long as possible.

Well, Phase 1, my original layout, is 99% complete, although there’s always room for improvement. Phase 2A, under construction, is about 60% done. Phase 2B, the Mooseport section with the carfloat terminal and waterfront, is mostly benchworked with the track at the back against the wall in place, perhaps 15% complete. Phase 3A is in the “thinking about it” stage, while Phase 3B gets about a 1% because there are structures on Phase 1 which will likely move to 3A once it’s built.

But, there’s nothing that says I have to stop at 3, is there?

Scale of 1-10 I’d say about a 2. I have the benchwork done, and I’ve started on some insulation-foam scenery, but nothing else has really happened (yet)

Layouts totaly finished: By my standards of today: None, but i hope the one I’m working on now will be the first (or as close to it as possible)

I am going to be brash and suggest that I am about a 1.5 even though I haven’t actually started the construction of the layout. I have acquired a lot of rolling stock, both kits and RTR, and I have built most of the structures in my plan, both scratch built and from kits. I currently have several locomotives in various stages of completion.

As I have mentioned before I have a long term plan that requires the mortgage to be paid off (six years) and my son to graduate and move out of the house (whenever[(-D]).

Right now my biggest problem is that I need to get my spray booth back in action. I have so many projects that need to be painted that I think I should contact Polly Scale to see if they will sell me paint by the gallon[(-D].

Bottom of the line right now for me is that my enjoyment of the hobby is at a ‘10’.
