Layout now stuff now compared to 5 years later.

My current layout is a 8.5 by 7.5. http://ztrainman.tripod.com/
Right now im model CSX and a little NS. Thing is i have CN engines and 6 NS engines and onmly 2 run able CSX engines. 5 years from now i plan on having a new layout and having CSX, NS, CN, and BNSF on my new one. Qustion is should i be buying stuff for the new one now like cars and Engines now or wait till then? Any inpot would be helpful.

I would wait until then. You just never know if you will actually have the new layout. You wouldn’t want to stock up on locos and stuff and then not get the new layout to put them on. Just my opinion.

Also a lot could happen in 5 years. You could find a new love for old steam. You couyld fall in love with a stripper move to Las Vegas and build an SP layout cause she like it.

You never know.

Gee spacemouse I like steam and I fell in love with a pipe organist. You are right you can’t predict.

I buy what I like now. While my interest may change, meaning different railroads not leaving trains. If I wait I might not be able to afford the items. And if you do want to model a diferent railroad just think of all the neat stuff you will have to sell or trade. Good luck. Phil

5 years ago, engines with decoders were rare, and sound was not even a dream. What do you suppose they’ll be making 5 years from now?

Right. Santa Fe Warbonnet F-7’s with horn-hook couplers. Some things never change.

Waltersrails, you are darned if you do, darned if you don’t… I’ve always said my railroad was the Wabash. However, until about 8 or 9 years ago, 1 Wabash locomotive and close to 150 of everything else… About the same ratio on the freight cars. If there’s something in CSX or your other chosens that really strikes your fancy, buy it (if you want to pay for it that is), otherwise, wait… You could easily end up with your own unintended train store if you just buy now for later.

Huh? I’ve been running in-loco sound since 1982 and it existed loooong before then. I remember drooling at the ads in the back of MR since ummm 1976 or so… Took me that long to save the $700 or so to buy one.

And there is a lesson. Things will be higher quality and relatively cheaper in the future. Back when I started command control, decoders were $50 each and the base unit was about $600. Contrast that with today. $12 for a decoder (that is 1/4 the size and does a bunch more functions) and $120 for a base unit. Hard to beat.

I can’t think of how many projects I’ve started that took gobs of time and money and never finished because a new product came out that made it obsolete. Had I not spent all that time and money and waited I would have gotten an almost the same quality model for cheaper and virtually no investment of time.

thanks for the replys i’ll take them in consideration.
