The top photo is a composite of five shots, the bottom photo is a composite of three shots. The train on the helix moved that far between shots. Normally they do not run this close together.

LION has certainly been busy. how does him find time to play with him food??? nice work and thanks for the pics.
Charlie
Looks like a ROARING good time! [;)]
If I become a monk, can I have one of those in my basement?
Keep rolling, my furry-pawed friend!
Stu
The Lion must have learned hypnotism at an early age. How else do you explain the Abbott allowing him such a large beautiful space? Does the Abbott even know what is going on up there? Is he too old to climb the stairs? The landlord here would never allow that much space.
So same question as Stu, How does one become a monk? Can I bring my model rail roading stuff with me? Can you imagine the Lion going to the Abbott, I have good news and bad news. The good news is I just recruited 50 new brothers, the bad news is they are all model rail roaders!
All seriousness aside, congrats on having a beautiful space and great layout!
Derek
WOW is all I can say, Lion. NICE. Does the size get overwhelming sometimes? This is the first layout I’ve seen dedicated to subways. I was amazed when I read a post from you about how your trains slow and stop at stations, and start again, all with relays and resistors. Makes my head spin. So, if this is all tunnels, as the layout progresses, the busy streets and tall buildings of NY will be on top of all this? And those trains…I have been paying attention to the cost of anything subway related as to rolling stock and motive power.
Great work!
Mike.
The Abbot was just up to the train room on Sunday. He heard the trains running and came up for a look see. He saw the trains running, but he did not notice that there was nobody at the controls. No visitors ever notice that there is nobody at the controls. The Abbot asked “Do they ever collide?” and I answer, “Well sometimes I rear end another train, I’ll need to buy some relays to improve the signal system” I did not elaborate on the fact that I would need 30 relays and that they would cost $120.00. We will leave that detail for another time.

Any chance that we will ever hear Lion speak in his own words?
At first I wasn’t sure what to make of the Lion. Now I read ALL of his posts.
It takes special skill and patience to do such a great job modelling with creative resources. And a subway system at that. At least you are blessed with space though.
Keep on roaring (I mean sharing)!
Seconded. Count me as a fan. Lion may be a little different, but he’s a rock solid modeler, and does things on his layout that are utterly unlike anything else I’ve ever seen. And it all seems to work very, very well.
As always, my hat goes off to you, my friendly furball!
Stu
Wow, you’ve done an excellent job Lion. I can only hope that my new layout will be at least half as impressive as yours. Thanks for sharing and keep up the good work. [:D]
Well I’ll keep a good thought for you. Somehow you convinced the Abbot that you needed Tortiose switch machines.
Remember its not too late to learn Hypnotism.
Derek
If you are impressed by the Lion’s layout, ask him to post a photo of his FULL SIZE, FULLY -FUNCTIONAL interlocking machine. That’s really impressive.
Yes it is and you can see it on his website if you are interested.
The Tortoise machines were purchased over a period of 25 years only a few at a time and at a time when the price is about half of what it is now. For the last batch of six that I bought, I did get permission from the Abbot for the bulk purchase.

Have you checked All Electronics? They have 5 volt DPDT reed relays for$1.25, 12 volt SPST reed relays for $0.85. And 12 volt SPDT relays for $0.80
All electronics is my #1 supply source. But for this project LION needs 12 volt 4PDT relays. They are $4.00 each in lots of 10+.

LION, there are a couple of apps for the iPhone that let you take 360 degree photos pretty easily, your layout would be a perfect 360 shot, not that it doesn’t look great already!

i-phone? i-phone???
What is this i-phone you speak of.
Telephone of LION is mounted on the wall, It has a handset connected by a curly wire, and it has this round rotary thing that you turn to dial numbers. It has been so ever since our phone number was “Richardton 15”

Hi guys
Forget I phones and panoramic pictures go to the Lion’s web site.
This show’s how impressive a project the Lion’s subway really is,
and how well its been done with nothing the rest of us take for granted.
Its only missing one thing the gift for the model railroad that doesn’t fit the theme.
I am impressed.
