I hope this is OK, because I voted for design even though I’m currently dismanteling my layout due to a move. I hate tearing apart a perfectly good RR!
I voted for design because thats the next thing for the new house.

Are they ever REALLY completed? REALLY?!? [:D]
i lied and said i’m at the design stage , but really i’m still in the 'thinking about design while i procrastinate over renovating the layout room while i buy kits and stuff ’ stage . funny that that wasn’t one of the choices , i’m sure i’m not the only one at this stage [:D]
That’s okay. I’m no where near finished with my current layout, and I’m already thinkg about a two feet deep, 8x10 corner switching layout. (take a 4x8 sheet of foam, and cut in two length wise.)
I think I may have a sickness. [:0]
I’m in the process of tearing up a “temp” 4x8 and have most of the bench work done for the new layout. An 8 x17 offset oval. I was going to do an exagerated “M” shape but saw a layout in last months MR and liked the basic concept. I can avoid tight radius turns with the oval and hopefully have a minimum 24" radius. I’m the kind of person that can only go so far with cad software or on graph paper. I have to have the bench work done before I can really lock in a track plan. I have a REALLY hard time visualizing grades on paper. Anyone else do it this way???[%-)]
Track laid ready for ballast…
Benchwork and trackwork. For the next few decades, it feels like…
My available space has just increased significantly. So I am in the design phase as the current layout will be dismantled. Construction should begin the end of this month.
Enjoy

I’m in the same boat, since I have such a large space to work with. I hope to have the benchwork complete in 2006. This has been a pretty good year for trackwork, as I managed to get a 500’ loop operational.
One town has it’s track nearly ballasted, and its rails painted. The fascia is on in that area, and a few structures are just sitting there for looks.
All track in, ops sessions ongoing monthly. Finally into the scenery stage.
i’m at the track work stage and design stage. i have benchwork and what not, and i have track down, but nothing is set. so right now i’m in the process of planning a layout and track work i guess. i voted design stage though.
I am in the benchwork phase after getting back into the hobby after 50 years. My layout will be an around the room . The room is 10 1/2 feet by 26 feet, but the layout will use 10 1/2 feet by 17feet, the remaining section is for work area, computer, storage, bookcase, tools etc.
You know pcarrell had an interesting response, and that has been true for me for years.
You should have had a vote for ‘electrical’. I just removed all 2200’ of old DC cab control wiring, and am installing new DCC ‘bus’ wiring, plus a working signal system.
The scenery is about 20% complete, and I still have to lay some track in the engine service area(TT construction has delayed that area).
I hope to be running again by the end of the year!

I’m in an awkward phase!! I’ve got all the track in, all raised on Woodland Scenics foam risers. I was going to do signalling next BUT looks like virtual 100% deal that we’ll be moving, probably mid-late 2006. So I figure I’m just going to skip ahead and do a ‘good enough’ scenery job on the layout. Just get it done to where I can enjoy for a while, run trains, and take pictures/videos of it before taking the sledgehammer to it !!
I am in all the above stages. When I get tired of one phase I go on to another. There is always something to be done in each of these stages. I practice the Linn Westcott approach to layout building which he called “growing a railroad.”
I’m definately in the design stages (I’ve been trapped in the design stages for either 2 years, or 15 years, depending on where you officially start my “adulthood” phase of model railroading). After several false starts as a kid, I know this time around I’d like to complete what I start.
The good news is after so many years of reading MR off and on, I know what types of layouts appeal to me (I think!).
I voted “benchwork,” though I guess installing the sub-roadbed could be considered preliminary trackwork.
I’m going to have to stop for a couple months to throw some plywood down and get some track laid to run trains for Christmas and then get back to the laminating after Epiphany.
thanks for all the replies. and yes a layout can be eventually done!!! [8D][^][:D] Tim
I voted for design stage. But basically am in saving stage…saving enough to buy lumber for benchwork…lol. so plenty of time for design work on paper while letting the money tree grow. Any body got any extra fertilizer
