I took a few photos today. It’s a free lance, n scale layout, set in the early 60’s.
Very nice job indeed !!! Are the mountains made with foam?
Thanks. Yes it’s just foam covered by #3 drywall compound. Here is a few more.
Nice, A lot going on there
Wow, fantastic photos.
Looking good but you do you need some help operating?[:P]
It is all very good. I especially like your situation of the pines in the first photo…good eye!
Nice layout and thanks for the pics. Its pics like this that keep me going.
Thanks for the comments. I took a few more today using a tripod and playing around with the manual settings on the camera a bit.
Here are a couple more.
Nice layout, looks like a classy, comfortable train room too.
Looks great, nice layout and nice room.
The Troy Aikman jersey on the wall just ruins the whole ambience though. Dallas fans… sheesh!
Looks mighty good! I like your mountains and you said they were made with drywall compound over foam. Could you elaborate on how you go about building them? Also, the house in the photo 4, who makes that kit?
Thanks,
JaRRell
The houses in photo #4 are Model Power houses. Thanks for the kind comments…go Cowboys!
In building the mountains I would just put a few rough cuts of foam down, in the general shape I wanted.
Then I would add a lot of drywall compound over the foam
I would add some more foam if I wanted more height, but I used a lot of drywall mud on some of the mountains. More than one five gallon bucket on some of them.
I would then paint the mountain one solid color, usually the darkest color first. After that dried I would add a second color, just hitting the high points. Sometimes I would add a 3rd color. All grey in tone.
Then I would add ground foam and some trees and call it done.
TRyburn, how wide is the bench? Maybe it is the angels of the PIC but it looks huge. How do you work on it, lift out sections?
Could you make the PIC a little bigger? I like to look.[:)]
On the plaster, I mix some latex paint in the plaster to make it the main color I am looking for.
I will add, great looking layout.

The bench is made of 4’ sections. Looking at the layout from left to right it’s 4x12, 4x4, 4x8, 4x4, 4x8, then the extension which is 6x4.
Here are a few shots from farther back to give you an idea of what I’m talking about.
I have a narrow path behind the layout so I can reach everything, sometimes using a step.
There is one area where I have to climb on the layout, so I don’t have much in the way of scenery there!
One word---- WOW! or GREAT! Ok, technically that’s two words but that much great looking layout space. Good job.[bow] [bow] [bow]
