I am just starting my first O-Gauge layout in the basement, and I was wondering if any of the track layout software available is useful? It looks intriguing, but I am hesitant to spend the money if it may not help me much. Any help would be appreciated.
I used atlas track on my layout. I had access to their track software, but frankly it was far easier for me to use graph paper and a compass to do my plan. I am not suggesting you should do that, but for me, it was valuable to transfer the rough track plan to my basement floor with a little chalk to get a rough idea of what my plan would be in full size. The curves were critical of course and I used 072 or 081 fixed curves where possible. In other areas, I would flex track to smooth out tricky areas. By translating the graphic work to the basement floor I could also see what benchwork I would need. Good luck.
RR-Track will run you about $100 and is worth every nickle in my opinion. While it is not perfect, you can get a real feel for what is possible in your space. I also like the start connecting track method, but RR Track does let you monkey around with a lot of designs and is easier on your hands.
