there was a show i saw it was called petticoat junction what was the name of the railroad i would like to model that layout for my daughter
The Sierra Railway Company connected communities in the Sierra Nevada foothills. The railroad became operational in the late 1890’s.
The Sierra operated in Northern California. When the Sierra Railway went to diesel power, their steam locomotives were donated to the Railtown 1897 State Historic Park in Jamestown, California. (If I remember correctly)
Engine No. 3 was then put to use in the making of various tv shows and movies.
The Cannonball, the official train of Hooterville, is actually Old Number Three.
It was also used in the motion pictures High Noon, Back to the Future III and the TV shows The Wild, Wild West and Little House on the Prairie.
There were dozens more tv commercials, etc., but I don’t remember the names of any off-hand.
The steam locomotives of the Sierra Railroad are still running for tourists at Railtown, which also includes shops, a roundhouse, and the Petticoat Junction water tower.
I don’t know where the actual scenes of the steam train operating were filmed, but the folks at Railtown in Jamestown would probably know.

If you’re looking for a train to use on this planned layout, Tyco made an HO model of The Hooterville Cannonball back in the 60’s when the show was on. They are collectors’ items now and so are very pricey. Expect to pay $200-$300 or more for a set. Of course, I’m sure you could easily make a model of it yourself by repainting a different train.
