LED Resources

Good Morning:
Can anyone recommend a good online source for procuring LED’s? Specifically I’m looking for LED’s for good lighting inside my HO scale structures. I have spent many hours on internal detail and I’d like to add go, crisp, long lasting LED’s to draw the eye to such details. Any recommendations would be appreciated.

Thanks,

PJ

Hello,

The last time I was in Radio Shack they had a good selection. Not sure if you have tried that yet.

Radio Shack or All Electronics (mail order) or Digikey (mail order) . White LEDs are often very blue, they can simulate fluorescent lighting but they don’t look right for locomotive headlamps or interior incandescent lighting. The too blue look can sometimes be corrected with a coat of yellow paint.

If it was me, I’d use 6 or 12 volt incandescent lamps for residential lighting. The color is better.

For all my HO structures I use doll house lighting, not LED, but they are very easy to install, and work great. I get them at WC Moor craft store.

Ngineering has a variety of LEDS including super tiny ones, believe me, if you sneezed, you will never find it.

Check walthers, they have YeloGlow for that incandescant color, and they are …BRIGHT!

All 3 of these sources have many different types from which to choose.

Mouser.

Warm white LEDs will give that incandescent look.

I have used Scotch masking tape over the white (bluish tint) LEDs as a filter to correct the color of my interiors.

Go on ebay and do a search for LED’s. There’s some direct source vendors (Chinese, mostly) that you can get 100 units plus the necessary resistors for a very reasonable price. Shipping is by slow boat, though, so don’t be in a hurry. You can also narrow the search by adding 3mm or 5mm, or bright white/ warm white or what have you.

I have purchased “inverted cone” LED’s off of ebay. They give 360 degree of lighting. Regular LED’s you almost have to look directly at the tip of the LED. Do a Google search for them. More expensive but well worth the expense. Mine came with resistors for 12 volts DC.

All Electronics has great prices and service, but their stock varies because they are a close-out / surplus dealer.

Make sure that you know exactly what you want.

Thanks everyone!

Hi,

it is too late right now, but at a train show there was a gentleman that cut apart christmas tree lights. He used a pair of side cutters and cut of the bulb part, then continued to carefully cut away the green rubber part until he had the led in his hand. Quite a cheap method and effective.
