led WHITE 5mm

just picked up 100 of these for $10

WHITE 5mm 11000mcd LED

11000 is that a good light for a house or a headlight

whats a mcd ?

LED’s are directional – they only emit light in a “forward” direction, thus only really good for headlights. (or other directional applications) Lamps (lightbulbs) are omnidirectional.

mcd is “milli candela”, or 1 one-thousandth od a candela (it’s a measure of the strength of the lightsource – wikipedia article here) so if they’re 1100 mcd (assuming the 11000 was a typo), thats about 1.1 cd – if the 11000 is accurate, thats more like 11 cd.

thanks you NeO6874

I checked again and now they even have 18000

but I know I can use quite a few of these

and at 3.5 v they add up to some power

Next time you’re shopping for LEDs, look for the 3mm warm whites - they are about half the size of what you got and look a lot closer to being in scale for an HO fixture. They are about the same price and mcd. rating.

Those 11,000mcd LEDs are REALLY bright (they’ll cast a three foot diameter circle of light on a wall ten feet away in a dark room !!!) … great for headlights, but working at their rated current will be like a 1000 watt spot-light on a structure. Using a 5000 to 10,000 ohm resistor will tone them down to a more acceptable brightness.

Another trick you can do is sand the entire tip of the LED with some fine sand-paper. This will help diffuse the light so it will cover a broader area and not just a hot spot on the ground below it.

Mark.

I think I may have to do that I guess I went a little brite with these

3mm and 5mm are more for headlights and spot lights. For interior lighting surface mounted LEDs are much better. They give a wider light angle. Super bright white are good for interior lighting. You can also find sunny white or golden white versions which look more like incandescent bulbs. But so far these are fairly expensive.

I’ve picked up some super bright whites like these:

SMD 1206

These things are tiny, and can be a pain to solder. You’ll need a low temp gun and some small wire. But once hooked up they look good for interior lighting, especially in passenger cars.

Here is a test photo using three inside a Hi-Level coach. With just 3 there is more light then I would have expected. I will go with 4 though for more even distribution. These LEDs normally give off a cool white color. But I added a blue sheet behind the windows to give that bluish look of Santa Fe Hi-Level tinted windows.

thanks southwest

I guess I did get Super Bright LEDS

check here ebay

wow they are not as tiny as some of the surface type I scruonged from a cdrom drive

man the ones you got $6 for 50 thats not too bad

they look like the lights under a bridge HMMM…

awsome
