I see a lot of stock and cabooses with this title. Does anyone where Lehigh Valley is. What line is it from. Thanks
The LV was a (primarily) anthracite hauler in the (eastern) PA, NJ and NY area. The main line ran from NYC to Buffalo NY. The PRR controlled the LV after May of 1962 and was merged into Conrail on 4-1-76.
They had a nice fleet of Alcos PAs and were well known for their premier passenger train, the Black Diamond.
I believe that the LV was so named for the Lehigh River / Lehigh Canal. At Easton, PA, the Lehigh joins the Delaware to form the border between NJ and PA.
Luke,
you are right on. And you sure know a lot about the Lehigh Valley for someone who lives so far away (more than I know, who lives just 40 minutes from Allentown, the major city in the Lehigh Valley.
For the original poster, the Allentown, Bethlehem, Easton metro area, heart of the Lehigh Valley, is 2 hours west of NYC and 1 hour NNW of Philadelphia, by auto.
The closest station to me that’s still active is an old Lehigh Valley station it was built in 1959 so prob close to one of the last ones built. Today Amtrack runs out of it over in Niagara Falls NY.
I grew up in Easton and graduated from Lehigh University in Bethlehem - but it was all Conrail by then :). I lived about 10 minutes from the round house and passenger station on the edge of downtown Easton. I remember the area well and hope to head back soon to see some of the remnants in NE PA and make another visit to steam town. My wife and I were there in 2006.
Morning Sun has a few good books on the Valley as does TRP.
I do not recall where they were headquartered, do you? New York City perhaps??
I went to school at Lafayette (IN Easton) so I am obligated to hate you. Helped spray paint your FB stadium in 1966. I remember the Easton “circle” but not much else (even trains) from those years. Regards!
Early part of my life was spent up that way. I recently saw a program on “Trains and Locomotives” on RFD-tv. It had a good portion of the show on the LV. Had some D&H as well as Susie Q., and NYC. Not sure if it was Herron video or one of the others.
