lenz and decoderpro

Can anyone answer a few questions, reguarding decoderpro with the lenz 100set

When programming speed tables with decoderpro (on the main) can I read back the changes i make to the cvs, or can i only read changes back when on the programming track???

I am also getting a lot of errors on the bottom of the screen like cant find decoder is this normal?

Any help is appreciated as i have only had decoder pro for a few days and still have a LOT to learn

You should be able to read back with the Set100. If you are getting a lot of errors, make sure your programming track is clean as well as the wheels on the loco you are programming. Also make sure you have the program track connected to the command station with reasonable wire - a long length of telephone wire is probably not ‘reasonable’ but you don’t have to run #12 wire for the program track, either.

If you haven’t already done so, join the JMRI group on Yahoo.

To clarify, you should be able to program both on the main and on the programming track, and read back only on the programming track.

As far as the DecoderPro errors, those correspond to Error 1 or Error 2 if you were programming using the throttle instead of DecoderPro for programming. That may happen occasionally, but it should not be common.

If you get that message while programming a locomotive with sound, make sure that your Lenz base station has the most current software version (version 3.5, I think). For some engines, you will need a small resistor (10 or 20 ohm) between the base station and the programming track. You can test that by trying to program with the throttle instead of DecoderPro. Too small or no resistor will give you an Error 1, and too large a resistor will give you an Error 2 (or the other way around).

thanks for your responses Randy and Steve

So let me get this straight, I can read and write values when programming with the lenz 100 hand controll on the programming track, but I can only write values when programming on the main

I thought decoderpro could read and write all cvs (except cv 3)on the main

Could you please clear this up guys? thanks

No, you should be able to read AND write on the program track, and write only on the main. The only exceptions are some sound decoders which may not read and write on the program track without adding some sort of booster like the PowerPax or Soundtraxx PTB-100. I haven’t seen a system yet though that cannot program these sound decoders on the main, the downside being that you cannot read back values on the main.
