Lest We Forget

Lately, I have seen all sorts of talk about Alco diesels. As Kevin put it, I go to the church of Alco, and I’m worried that we have forgotten about one other facet of Alco:

Their Steam Locomotives

Unless you’ve forgotten, Alco made the Big Boy, Challenger, J3a, FEF-3, and many more wonderful locomotives. While Alco’s diesels were certainly excellent, I believe the time has come for us to give Alco’s steamers the respect they deserve. After all, Alco started in 1907, and worked for decades before diesels even made an appearance.

See you around the forums,

It’s all true. I wrote a review of *** Stienbrenner’s new Alco book. I complained that he hadn’t really addressed Alco’s steam exports, which were very important in influencing development in some countries, such as China.

And Alco’s constituents started long before 1907! They built more than 70000 steam locomotives. So basically, I agree.
