Lets Talk N Scale Uncoupling

Over the weekend I purchased micro-trains magnetic uncouplers. I got the large under track magnet and the little ones to fit in between the rails.

After a couple of tries I became an expert at uncoupling using the large under track magnet.

The between the rails magnets I just couldn’t get to work! :frowning:

What do you use and what are your experiences with uncoupling in n-scale.

What about the S&L Enterprises magnets? I just ordered one, and can’t wait to see how they perform.

Just like I do in HO…I use my small flat tip screw driver…[:D]

I made for my Nscale empire homemade electromagnetic uncoupler in great quantities.

In fact they are a looking from one show in MR a few years ago in just a small part of an article about a layout tour.

They are made from a steel tube of 2 inch length and a average 1.5 inch in diameter.
A part is cut over all over the lenght so you ave a “U” from 2 inch lenght.
The “U” is full filled with a 0.5 milimeter insulated (varnish) brass wire simply turned in the lenght around it.
I glue two plate on the “U” to keep the wire in. ( Do it before putting the wire).
Then I glue the top size with epoxy on a piece of roughly) 2.5x2.5 inch transparent styrene of 0.3 milimeter.

I cut a hole in the table so the “U” can drop in.

The track is next posed on the transparent sheet, it’s important to put the two side of the “U” between the two lenght of rail.

Next I put a 12Vdc power on it. Take a big power Transfo, they like current!

It’s important to not exceed a 2 or three second action because they heat.

Even if the knucle are misaligned the decoupler open them because of it’s power.

It’s inexpensive and some worked for more than 10 years on my layout.

Then when the U is full

I SEE SOME ARE LOOKING FOR UNCOUPLING SOLUTION IN THE FORUM? SO TAKE A LOOK TO THIS ONE POSTED A FEW MONTHS AGO.

I GIVE THE WAY TO SCRATCHBUILD A ELECTROMAGNETIC UNCOUPLING SYSTEM

YOU CAN TRANSFER THE IDEA TO HO SCALE TOO. SOME FRIENDS OF MINE USE IT.

I agree with Mr. Murphy above. I don’t like the magnetic un-couplers at all. The only time I will use them is when I can’t reach my cars to un-couple them. I’ve had way to many problems with false un-coupling and, after you have un-coupled, you have to shove the cars off the magnet in order to re-couple them.

I simply use the smallest skewing sticks I can find and cut them about 4-5" long. I then coat the points with a good coat of graphite all around from a lead pencil. After bunching up the slack. I just insert the point and give a partial turn and they are un-coupled. Very simple. And you can usually pick up a bag at your local grocery store for a buck or two. Nice and cheap! I’ve even used the larger ones in H-O scale and they also work great.

Good luck, cf7
