Letter to surface transportation board regarding Class 1s refusal to haul Amish Personal Freight

Isn’t a horse and buggy good enough for Amish? If you get some bogies, maybe NS will run “buggy-railers”.[:D]

The Amish furniture business is pretty solid. They manufacture quality products and then distribute it thru a loose group of distributors.

The issue here is that the furniture is new and not personal effects. However, I seriously doubt if there would be sufficient volume to move furniture in boxcar lots. Plus furniture requires special handling. Most furniture manufacturers have their own fleets of tractor trailers (with special hardware) for handling.

Personal effects, on the other hand are another matter. That moves on a household goods company such as Mayflower or northAmerican Van Lines.

If the religious situation is getting in the way of commerce, knowing the Amish way of life, I am sure they will split off and start a new group.

The Amish are a very successful and powerful group of farmers and business people in certain areas of the US. I think we often underestimate their economic power, because we look at horses and buggies and believe they must be economically challenged. That is the furthest thing the truth.

The point here ia that anybody should be able to get a boxcar on a siding and ship just about anything personal or otherwise to just about anywere at a reasonble rate. That is what “Common Carriar” means right? The Railroads can just be for big buisness who want move in unit trains. I Undersatnd that LTC is dead but If I want to pay the full boxcar rate to ship my aunts stuff I should be able too…

Yeah, lets call for the men in white coats with the butterfly nets for him already…
