Liams first BB Boxcar

Here are pics of Liams first BB boxcar that he assembled (with a little help) himself & he’s only 5.

He decided he was going to “fix” one of my junk cars & he managed to remove the trucks himself so I went & found a cheap BB kit on eBay for him to assemble. Too bad it’s CN, but ya can’t have everything!

That is really priceless, it is what the hobby is all about. Congratulations Liam, and Dad be sure to keep the pictures.

I fully agree that is a priceless experience.

Congratulations Liams! [:D][tup]

Blue box kit: $5

Spending time with your kid in the world’s GREATEST family oriented hobby: priceless.

Now I DARE someone over 5 years of age to post that they can’t get the darn things to go together [(-D]

OUTSTANDING !!!

I would give that young man a major “ATTABOY” for sure - and certainly one for his Daddy!

I was a tad older when I built my first BB - 15 in 1959 or 1960. Frankly, if it wasn’t for Athearn, I have serious doubts I would be in the hobby. Today I have a bunch of them, all with KDs and IM wheels and mild weathering & Dullcoat, and they still bring me a whole lot of enjoyment.

No, they don’t have all the fancy details as the Red Caboose or Intermountain kits, but they sure do stand up well to active layout running.

Anyway, thank you for sharing your son’t accomplishment with us! It really is a special time.

Dear Sir: Great work dad. Now if your son can maintain his interest to adulthood. I fear the hobby is a dying one as most of us are over 50. There may be a chance for the hobby if we can interest the younger generation!

Right now, he’s all about trains. Stack trains, passenger trains & steam locomotives!

As long as I’m around, there will be a layout to run trains on. Fingers are crossed.

It’s wierd, a few times we’ve had people over & once they hear I have trains in the basement, it’s like "Really?? Can we have a look??

My daughter plays ringette & the few times we’ve had the team over, some of the girls actually wanted to check them out. That was cool.

LOL, I got a better one. Last year Liam was running a train on my clubs layout at one of the shows I go to. OH, it’s a DIGITRAX powered layout. The next time someone says they can’t figure out how to use Digitrax stuff I’m going to laugh, lol.

Excellent!!!

Good job at being a Dad, Dad! [tup]

Always wonderful to hear about youth interested and encouraged in the hobby.

And just think, Athearn has done away with such kits which can do so much to build the confodence of a new member (young or old) to the hobby.

Keep up the good work Dad and may you have many years modeling enjoyment with your son.

Good luck,
