lighting up the IHC movie theater

Ok, i might be crazy but i rember an article in the 70s or to mid 80s, it was showing how to use fiber optic or something to light up the marquee and the movie theater… been trying to find the artcile with the NMRA index but either i remember wrong or im not using the index right.

any help? does it even ring a bell?

If I remeber right it was by Earl Smallshaw [sp?] but can’t remeber year or month…Cox 47

Well there are several ways to do this.

The easiest way it to attach a painted disc to a motor that has “dark colored spokes” in it. (tape over lexan/clear plastic will do it) Then you put a lightbulb behind it. Line up the fiber optics in front of the wheel in a semi circular pattern and let the wheel run. Run the fiber optics around the marquee.

I’ve seen multiple colors done this way as well by using various paints for the dark spokes to filter out light.

5 sec after i wrote this i found the correct issue: MArch 1976, quite an extensive article about a scratchbuilt movie thether, i’ll steal ideas to adapt to the kit

I found one of these from Miller Engineering / Micro Structures at a hobby shop in the closeout bin for a few dollars:

I got a medium-sized one, more appropriate for HO. It may not be kit-specific for the IHC, but I think it will dress up my theater nicely.
