Lighting up the way.

On a cold Monday morning the QRVNPP lights up the S curve at Floriston on its journey east over the Sierra Nevadas. This train will soon be in Sparks where it will get a fresh crew and make its daylight trip through Nevada.

Enjoy.

Wow ! Another neat entry in what seems to be developing as a new genre of rail photography - the technique of ‘locomotive-lighting’ of the scene and background.

The composition is great - the S-curve ties the whole image together. I also like the dark wall at the right, and the contrast with the light at the upper left. What’s really neat is how the locomotive headlight emphasizes the track and R-O-W, and also illuminates the surroundings for context of the setting, without making it the dominant element as happens during daylight photography simply because of the large proportion of the image that it occupies.

Some technical questions: What f-stop or equivalent did you use ? I presume that the time exposure was only until the locomotive went out of view to the left - you did not leave the shutter open for the entire passage of the train ? Have you ever tried this photo with the train coming towards you ? The headlight might glare too much, but the effect with this complicated terrain might also be interesting.

Thanks for sharing ! Looking forward to others that you would like to share.
