Pretty cool. The modeler is Bill Grady. Most of the kits are Downtown Deco or Downtown Deco kitbashes. Love the lighting.

I think that last shot would look even better, with some lighting in the buildings, but nice.

I’m not sure what is going on in the second photo. Looks like the tracks just split at the turnout and dead end at the buildings. Are the buildings set there for photographic purposes, or am I just seeing an optical illusion?

looks like something out of the old movie “Popeye” with Robin Williams to me.

chalie

Way cool!

Oh, to have that much space and be that talented!

I, too am confused by the deadending of track into the buildings.

Maybe it is a stretch of buildings from elsewhere moved there to be cast into the shot?

Wonder whose it is?

Turnout? What turnout? Looks to me like two parallel tracks too close together for anything to pass. And what’s supposed to be illuminating the scene? An incandescent moon?

Original post, second sentence.

Very nice modeling. I, too, would like to see some interior and exterior lighting for more realism. I’m, however, not a big George Sellios fan of “make everything as dirty as possible”.

While some parts should appropriately look grimy and un-kept, having everything in that state doesn’t look real; nor does it reflect an accurate picture of that time and era. (Even during the depression, people still took pride in their surroundings and made due with what they had.) If it’s just a caricature then, yes - the builder has captured it.

I am a big fan of details and can truly appreciate the talent, time, and effort that someone has put into a scene. I think there is a balance though. IMO, Lance Mindheim is one of the best at both detail and realism.

Tom

Right. I too have a great appreciation for what Lance has done, and continues to do. As has been mentioned above, however, lighting and good photography have a lot to do with it too.

Here is another picture Bill sent me. I think this is mainly a diorama vs a working layout.

Now THAT’S more like it…

I’ll agree with Dave on that, much better. I believe the lights, make that one, jump out.

Cheers,

Frank

Yep, the lights definitely add a missing dimension to the diorama.

Tom

The Chessie System GP something or the other looks a little out of place in the 2nd photo. Seems like they could have moved it before the shutter was open. I still like it though. I like the diorama with the lights too. Is that an 1928 cream colored model-A? I’ve forgotten the distinguishing characteristics from the side.

The Colorado Model Railroad Museum (formerly Greeley Freight Station Museum) is working on lighting the structures to have “night time” operations and open houses. I only hope they look as good as these when we get them done.
