I’m interested in adding some details found alongside track. I seem to remember a Kalmbach book that dealt with this subject specifically, but I can’t seem to find it anywhere. If you could tell me what some of your favorite things to add are, along with the names of the manufacturers in any posts, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
Details along the track is variable to era and road modeled. Depending on what road you are modeling and at what time period would dictate even the smallest of details. You probably wouldn’t want keystone shaped whistle posts on a Southern Pacific road. Or even the large relay box on a small steam era road when most signal control boxes were concrete or a wood shack.
Don’t get discouraged. Look at photos of your favorite road and instead of looking at the centered object look around it and notice things like rail joint bars, signal bridges, telephone boxes, fences, signs, and everything else. Most of the stuff can be bought, but it would really break the bank of most modelers. Most details can be easily made at little or no cost and are fun to do.
I think the book your thinking of is titled Trackwork and Lineside Detail. It seems to be out of print and not listed on the Kalmbach site.

There is a PDF download called Modeling the Railroad Right-of-Way item mprdf055. About 22 pages of useful information. It’s in the Kalmbach online store under digital downloads - model railroad scenery.
