That SD70 is nice and shiny[:)]. But whats up with the passenger cars, is it some sort of executive train?
These are my first experiments with night photography. My expiereince with digital is use a tripod and no flash!!!
I was dissapointed with this, I held the camera in my hand so its a bit fuzzy. But they were going to shut off soon cause the train was going to leave the block so I didnt have time to set up.

I wonder how he got that picture. Was it luck to see the NFS and Buckingham Branch at the same time, or did he over-lap 2 pictures?
Yeah, that is NS’s Office Car Special…Tuscan Red…The SD70M in the pic is only a couple of months old…part of the year-end 2004 order of SD70M’s, Paint has probably hardly dried on that engine in that shot. It would have been nice for NS to have kept some older power to run their Office Car Specials…Conrail had their 3 E-8’s in Pullman Green, which Bennett Levin later acquired from NS and CSX and beautifull restored 2 of them into their original PRR livery… UP still uses their E-9’s for special events too. There’s an awfull lot of light coming in from the left hand section of the photograph, the Ditch lights are also off on the NS unit for some reason.
A great shot, none-the-less.

Somehow, the staged shot just doesn’t have the pizazz of a Link original. It’s good-don’t get me wrong-but it’s missing something, like maybe a J.[:-,][(-D]

That is an absolutely fantastic shot! I love it! I’ve always loved night photos of trains and am a big fan of O. Winston Link. The only thing that I wonder about is that if this was a staged photo for this special occaision, why wouldn’t they have used a hopper car that didn’t have any graffiti on it? Not that that makes it any less of an amazing picture.
bnsfkline, I have to compliment you on that fantastic shot. For a first night photo, that’s pretty good! One thing about it is that you really can’t tell what kind of a train it is from looking at it. It could be any train going anywhere. It might be a diesel, an electric or a streamlined steam engine that might be carring a passenger of freight train. It’s a very vivid and powerful picture that makes you use your imagination.
How do you mean staged? That link said that the NS was parked for the occasion.

We mean that it was pre-arranged…the photographer didn’t just happen to luck out and catch the two trains as such, plus the lighting on the left side of the picture looks like it was set up for the photograph…and the link several posts up discussing the O Winston Link Anniversary and the NS OCS’ role in the event clarifies that. Its a cool shot. It will get its couple of weeks on the desktop. Kinda like the road above the SD70.
