Howdy all,

I found a postwar Lionel 1666 with a smoke unit installed for a decent price. The railroad name I’m using used to use the Prairie style steam locomotive. Are there any drawbacks for this engine?

Is there a downside to having slide shoes vs roller pickups?

The slide shoes work just fine. I have several 1666’s and locomotives of the same type. Great running locomotives.

I have a Prewar 1666 I bought off ebay. spent some time in someone’s damp basement. It was my first brought back from the dead project. It’s a great runner.

And I have a Postwar 1666. Both run beautifuly. Slide shoes aren’t any trouble.

They will wear out but are easy to get and to change and if they don’t have groves cut into them from wear they work just fine.
