Lionel 182 Crane Restoration

Here’s a few photos of my 182 Crane restoration project.

Existing Condition:

Cleaned, and ready for stripping and sandblasting…I’m using a 2-step process because of the lead paint.

The crane control gears have been left out here so I can paint the top plate.

Keep us posted.

Kurt,

How long did it take you to do the cleanup? How did you clean those windings without damaging them? Looking good. Waiting for the pics.

Jack

Kurt,
I was looking at the pics more closely… you missed a part.

In the third pic there is a gear under the metal lever, this gear is missing in the last picture.

I’m sure you didn’t forget it as you haven’t finished yet, but thought I would point this out just in case.

Jack: So far about I have about 4-5 hours into it. I removed the armature and cleaned everything with a toothbrush damp (not wet) with denatured alcohol. I’m finding the research is most time consuming. Not much in print about this unit. I have been doing comparative analysis with the 165, and the 282R.

Brent: You’re right. 2-gears actually, one top and bottom. I will reinstall those after I strip, sand, and repaint the top plate. I needed the other gears in place to remember how to put everything back together. LOL.

If anyone has a wiring diagram for the 165C controller, I would appreciate a copy.

Thanks,

Kurt

Looking good, Kurt! What a difference - did you use Simple Green to clean it or another product?

Brutus: Small glop of dish soap in warm water.

My favorite cleaning agent.
