Hi all - I just acquired a nice 2033 AA Union Pacific set from a garage sale today. I purchased from original owner. I want to remake the frieght consist of this set. He doesn’t remember nor can he locate the orginal rolling stock. Any insight would be great. I really don’t need another set of Alcos but - you can’t beat a super rare find.
The only set I found in my reference is 2033 being in set #1464-W which was a passanger set. It was a 1952-53 set and came with three passanger cars - 2421, 2422 and 2423. These being the Maplewood, Chatham and Hillside cars with silver roofs.
Having grown up in the central New Jersey area, I knew themunicipalities of Maplewood, Chatham and Hillside well.
I am by no means the definative resrouce on this - but flipping through a reference book, this is waht I found. Someone more knowledgeable than I might have other info.
The Evil Doctor is in !!! Frank 53 is correct, The 2033 U.P. Alcos were in set#1464W.
This set was a passenger set. The Erie Alco’s were a freght set. This was in 1953, In the 1950 catalog the 2023 U.P. Alco’s pulled both freght and passenger sets. #1464W is the “Anniversary set” #1467W is the freght version. It’s made up with the following cars: 6656 stock car; 6465 Sunoco two-dome tank car; 6456 black or maroon Lehigh
Valley hopper; 6357 illuminated SP-type caboose. The sets carried over in 195, but the Alco’s were painted silver/gray. In 1952, the Alco #'s were changed to 2033.The freght set was pulled by Erie Alco’s. In 1953, The paint on the U.P. Alco’s went to silver/silver.1954 there was no U.P. Alco’s listed. I hope this info is helpful to you.
Good Luck with the Alco’s ! Till My Next Missive, I Remain The Humble, Yet Strangly Evil Doctor [}:)] !!!

Doc,
I’m not sure I’ve got this correct. I’m trying to figure out what I have and from what year in my early childhood.
Postwarlionel listed the 2023 UP Alcos as running for 2 years, 1950 and 1951 only. The earliest production version in 1950 was the yellow painted cab with the grey roof and grey nose. The later 1950 version differed in that the nose of the cab was yellow (mine). The 1951 version of the 2023’s went to the grey cab with the dark grey roof.
My UP 2023 (number boards) Alcos are the yellow nosed version in a factory carton with inserts and labelled 2033-20. Yes, I have the 2421 (Maplewood), 2422 (Chatham), and 2423 (Hillside) passenger cars. I also have the same freight cars you listed. But I have no boxes for the individual cars or the 1464W (passenger) or 1467W (freight) set boxes. I never knew th
Jack,
What color roofs do your passenger cars have? Silver or dark gray?
Jim
Silver, same as the rest of the body, with black lettering.
In addition, I have a 2432 Clifton (Pulman) and a 2434 Newark (Pulman), both also solid silver with red lettering.
According to the post war lionel library, those all-silver passenger cars with black lettering didn’t come out until 1952, and the red lettered 2432 and 2434 didn’t come out until 1954. Sounds like someone made this set up for you.
Jim
Jim,
Thanks for the info. My father apparently started buying trains before I was born. I received the passenger cars Christmas 1954 as my “first” train along with the 2031 Rock Island Alcos (1952) which didn’t come in a set.
If he really bought this stuff for himself, didn’t use them, and then gave them to me, does that count as “REGIFTING?”
Jack
Jack, the fact that your dad gave them to you is all that counts. Run them Alcos and enjoy them!
Jim
Sometimes the “BOOK” is wrong. I have evidence of that.
Jack,
Have fun at the NETCA show in Marlboro tomorow! Go see Dr. tinker about the parts you need. His real name is Dave. Only deal with him, not one of his helpers. Let me know all about it. I was planning to go, but I’m too sick to be going anywhere. [xx(]

Thanks for the info on the show. I’m booked, though, scheduled to go over to my daughter and son-in-law’s house and help put up the outdoor decorations with my granddaughter. We were scheduled to do that last Saturday, but the temperatures and wind made it feel like about 10. So they wimped out (lucky for me). It ain’t Christmas unless you procrastinate on this type of project until the outdoor temps require Gortex. Also makes it more challenging to do the more delicate train projects once your fingers get frosbitten.
