Lionel #254 Engine

Hi,

I just bought a Lionel #254 Engine that will not operate in forward or reverse. The engine has been rewired and the brushes look good. The engine made one mad leap forward when I first put in on the track, but I quickly pulled it off the track so it didn’t collide with its passenger cars. I used the manual reverse lever to reverse direction of the engine, and since than the engine will just make a slight hum or buzz when power is applied to it. The field coils seem to get pretty hot. Could the manual reverse unit be bad?

Does anyone have a wiring diagram for this manual reverse unit so I can see if it is wired correctly?

The motor appears to be clean and good shape.
