Howdy all…Tim here again…Some time ago, maybe 15 years ago, my dad got me the 44E freight set. The engine was basically a reproduction of the 4u or u-Build-it loco. Well somewhere along the line, someone liberated it from me, but left behind the freight cars. I felt so sick when I realized it was stolen.
Anyway, how realistic is it to find this engine for sale by itself? or at all? I would very much like to replace it. Any ideas?
Your loco is a number 9E I think…it came is a number 44 freight set in the 1930’s i believe…its on ebay right now and ends in 3 hours for under $200…Might wanna check it out…But i am pretty sure from my sources that its a 9E loco, not sure what color you had, but there is a green one on ebay now…thanks.
The 4 and 4U share the same shell as the 254. The other poster is correct. You will have better luck finding an old 254 than a 4 or 4U as the motors are different but the exteriors are almost identical. (The reversing mechanism slots are in different locations). Most 254s came in shades of green, but some were red. Get an old one, strip it and paint if orange. Krylon makes a pretty close match for this shade of orange. 254s are plentiful, so don’t worry about “ruining” an original.
The 9E is a standard guage engine…It may very well be the correct #44 set from the 30’s…The 44 freight set I am talking about was a reproduction and does share the same body as a 254 or 4U. I might just do that and get a 254 and “Restore” it for the set.
