Lionel 520 box cab

Looking for some part numbers for the Lionel 520 box Cab in the Greenberg repair manual. Only to find out it’s not listed? I know it’s a steam engine motor but not sure which one. Anyone know why it’s not listed and where to get part number / diagram for it?

Hi Mike: I have a couple of 520. I got parts from Log Cabin Train Shop, 600 Rochester Road, Pittsburgh, Pa 15237. Phone 412 719 5390, Email logcabintrain@gmail.com. Suggest you start with an email. He show up at a lot of train shows in western Pennsylvania and eastern Ohio. I bought the pantograph and the pilot/trailing truck. I never settled on which end is the front.

I purchased the cars to build the 1542 Freight set cataloged in 1956/ The 520 was sold separately in 1956 for $12.95. My favorite is a redecorated Pennsylvania 520 pulling four later vintage baby Madison cars. I used a picture of a K-Line Box Car as a pattern for my paint scheme. I later found a Pennsylvania Box Cab Electric at the Pennsylvania Railroad Museum in Strasburg, Pennsylvania.

Technically that Rat is a switcher with something like 20mph top speed, but it’s certainly a reasonable approximation to a 520!

PRR did have some boxcabs in the mix when researching original power for the North River Tunnels, and of course the DD1s were interestingly close to what you could bash out of a couple of 520s slightly extended with four-wheel engine trucks…

The Pennsylvania black Box cab looks sharp! And the baby Madison’s behind it look really nice. Might do a freight and passenger myself.

Most people associate Lionel’s trains with fantasy or, at best, distorted versions of the prototype. Certainly, they had to make concessions to the needs of sharp curves and small layouts, and, certainly, they did come up with some pretty unrealistic pieces, but Lionel really did some good work with the prototype, even if some of the prototypes chosen were obscure. The #520 is a good example. The #41 is another. Many people assume they are completely imaginary, but such is not the case, Lionel did its homework. They provided a good dose of reality amid the play value.
