Lionel 6-28044 Engine

I have a 6-28055 Lionel engine (1725 Great Northern Hudson) that stops intermittently. The engine will run smoothly and then hesitate or stop completely and then start up again. We tried some basic troubleshooting at the club but no luck. When the engine stops the headlight stays on and does not flicker and the e-unit does not reverse either so we ruled out an interuption of power from the track. We ran the chassis without the body and tried checking for hot components and probed the wires looking for a loose connection or a broken wire still no luck. We also checcked the can motor and that runs smoothly so I suspect that there is a bad electrical component but decided to stop and see if anyone else has run into this problem. Troubleshooting hints would be a big help

Thanks

Ole

Have you checked the brushes and springs? Perhaps the brushes are getting stuck. Also, you may have gunk on the commutator of the armature. Another problem could be a open armature, but I don’t think it is easy to check in a can motor, have not had to work on one…yet.

Try to check the circuit board inside as this sounds like an electronics problem and not a simple electrical problem. Are you running in TMCC? This could be your problem! One other thing to consider are you using MTH’s DCS on a Lionel TMCC locomotive, they do not always match correctly. Try to run the locomotive in conventioal mode and see what happens.
