lionel 6-28067 4-6-2 Prices

I am very new to the hobby of o gauge trains and reading all I can to find information. I am interested in collecting and saw the lionel 6-28067 Erie 4-6-2 for sale for $589.00 and noticed on the lionel website the price is $999.95. I have tried to find out if there was something wrong with this particular model and lionel said that each dealer sets thier own price. My question is would this be a good piece to start a collection with? Is there something wrong with that particular locomotive? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Both the Erie and B&O versions are being highly discounted. My local hobby shop had a sale on Saturday and both were priced at $599. Both are beautiful engines. I don’t have one myself, but everyone I know that has purchased one has indicated they operate just fine.

Hello, Paying bust out retail is not the way to enter this hobby, particularly on high ticket items. Personally I spend lot of time reviewing all the mail order price lists that I can before making a major purchase. Within the last year I was able to take advantage of a great deal on an engine listed at $499.00, I payed $225.00 plus $8.00 shipping. Do not neglect your local hobby dealer, many times you can do very well purchasing “last years model” or store demos.
