Hi–I am a first time user so excuse me if I do something wrong–I have a 6464-275 State of Maine car that is in the orginal box. (the old style looking box with the perforated window in front)-- greenberg book says this car was made 55, 57-59 but this car has plastic trucks with plastic couplers. I thought that post war cars had all metal trucks with the small square plate on bottom–how do I tell what I have?? Outside of car is stamped made in USA on bottom also has IL 40-6,IW 9-2, IH 10-0 what do these mean and what do I have here?? Any help would be appreciated. Trying to settle this today
A postwar car should have metal trucks. I’m pretty sure a postwar box would be orange and blue with no window. The numbers are the inside dimensions of the prototype car.
From 1957-61 6464 cars came with “Early AAR plastic trucks”. These had a metal knuckle, the axle ends were not visible, and had flush wheel hubs.
In late 1961 they moved to “Early AAR plastic trucks with Delrin knuckle”.
From 1962 through 68 they used the same trucks but with a change in the shape of the knuckle cam.
So basically ALL 6464 trucks were plastic from 1957-1968. Some 1969 cars came with die-cast bar-end trucks that were left-over production.
