lionel 8021 "B" unit with light

Hi, I acquired a Lionel MPC Santa Fe, 8020 and 8021, boxed set # 6-8020. The A&B units both have a wire coming out of the rear/front port hole and connect to each other with a little yellow banana clip. The wire powers a light in the “B” unit. My question is was this set altered or is it original equipment. Also I believe the E-unit is not the correct one for this diesel as the lever is pointing down and not coming out of the slot on the top. Any information on this set will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you. JonnyG

If you go to Lionel’s web site and search under owner’s manuals for the 2 numbers listed, it appears that who ever had the units before you did some alterations as the parts diagram shows the e-unit lever pointing up in the A unit and there is no indication of a tether to the B unit or a lamp in the B unit.

I’ve owed a couple of those sets over the years and no they did not come that way with a lighted B-Unit. Somebody modified them sometime in the past.

RT is correct that B unit had no light Or pick up for one. The A unit had a two way with forward/reverse only with lever up through the top.

It’s altered. Probably done when the 3 position E-unit was put in to replace the original 2 position. Does it still have the MPC power truck w/ traction tires & the double wound field?

Rob

First of all, Thank You to everyone who helped, I suspected it wasn’t original. It does have the Power truck w/ traction tires but I don’t know what the “double wound field” is.

Again Thank to all of you.
