Lionel Automatic Crossing Signal 154

The early design shows a white crossing sign and a base which has 3 terminals. The later design shows a black crossing sign and a base which has 2 terminals.

Would you know when Lionel changed the design?

Would you know why the newer base has only 2 terminals instead of 3?

(I contacted Lionel. They have “no information” on the changes)

Also…I have a Lionel "Control Switch No. 88…Can’t remember what it is used for. Can you help?

As always, many thanks.

All older 154s used a track connector, the train wheels ran over it and completed the ground circuit. Newer 154s have a small board in them that gives you an even flash so all it needs is an on/off connection. # 88 is a push button momentary on/off switch you could use for most anything.

SIR JAMES I: Appreciate the info. I learn something new every day about this hobby. Thanks, so much.
