Lionel Engine for Marx Marlines?

I’d like to run a Marx Marlines CP style steam engine on my Lionel O-27 layout that has both turnouts and crossings. In an earlier posting I told how I was having trouble with it running through the turnouts. A replay identified the problem as the big gear on the drive wheels. After studying the turnout, I’ve concluded that the modification to eliminate this problem will lead to derailments in general, not a fun thing. So my next option is to replace the current engine with one without the big gear on the drive wheels. This leads to my question: Has anyone replaced the Marx engine with one from Lionel, and if so which one?

Try a 2037 or a 2026. Built like a tank and not expensive at all.

I agree with overall. My first locomotive (1951) was a 2026, and sixty-one years later, it’s still running as smoothly as it did when new. Better, in fact, since I know a lot more about maintenance than I did in 1951.

And both the Korean War-era 2026 and the 2037 are way undervalued at the present time, so yes, you can get them very inexpensively.

If you are looking to keep the Marx engine shell, and just replace the wheels, gears, and motor “under the hood”, I was able to take a motor et al from a Marx 400 (or was it a 490), and make it work in a Marx 999.

OR…the easlest cheapest way ls to use Marx turnouts. l have lne loop set up that way to run my Marx locos.

Yes, any Marx loco with double reduction gears will go through Lionel switches. You’ll probably have to swap out motor mounts. Pretty simple to do.

I run Marx 666’s and a 1666 all the time on my layout with Lionel and K-Line switches.
