I’m looking to add a single F3 combo to my operating collection. I want to have something in running condition that can run around the tree with my 2321 and 736. I have a very nice set of 2343’s well its actually a 2175w 1951 set but, I will sell to purchase one of these diesels. I really like the 1954-1957 stuff and that is my main area of focus. Is it a down grade to sell a 2343 to get a 2363. I love that fact that the 2363 is kind of an oddball. Thanks guys!
I much prefer the vertical-motor F3s. The early ones were particularly smooth-running. The one of my 2243 sets that I got new in 1955 is a very fine machine–the motor turns easily through the worm gearing when the unit is pushed along the track with only the magnetraction keeping the wheels from slipping. The truck pivots (center bearings) are also especially far inboard, allowing the unit to clear O27 switch machines.
I believe the 2363 is more valuable than the 2343. I have always thought the IC colors were among the most beautiful. I would do it.
Now I’m not sure! I’ve been looking at 2363’s all night and I think they maybe out of the budget for a 24 year old guy. My other trains are beaters, while I’m not looking for a LN or even Excelent + model I would like to find something nice! Maybe a Williams Golden Memories is a good choice? I don’t know, I just love postwar engines…plus when you have a whole catalog to choose from I really have no idea which Williams repro I would pick!!!
I have to agree with Bob on the running qualities of the 2343/2344/2333 compared to later versions. Too bad that Lionel eventually chose to use a cheaper to produce drive train, though.
I think my 2321 Lackawanna Fm runs a lot better and smoother than my 2343’s. The 2343’s grown and make more noise pulling less cars than the vert motors in the FM. What would you do a new Williams F3 passenger set or a vinatge F3 engine?
Yes, 2363’s are pricey and much more valuable than 2343’s. Williams is probably a better choice for operating. They run better. You can find discounts. 2245 postwar Texas Specials are my favorite. They are pretty reasonable in nice condition. I would buy the origionals over Williams because they aren’t real pricey.
2344, 2354, for me. Not sure what your road name pref is but my nyc are still running strong 50 yrs later. Also I have a 681 and a 736… Workhorses to say the least. If you want Lionels… PW’s otherwise Williams repros are a good choice probably run the same price and offers the same options.
I have four different road names of the new Williams Golden Memory F3 sets. They are very nice and look exactly like the Lionel PW. The pilot is more scale looking and in my opinion actually looks better. I would suggest Williams. I haven’t seen any PW F units you could buy for the same money you can get Williams that didn’t look like well used junk/
