Do you think that the newer lionel F3s, and the Williams edition look like the postwar models[?]
There are really only so many ways to make an F-3, and just about any model calling itself an F-3 will have the same general shape and size.
With that said, thought, by new Lionels you mean the scale models of the last two or three years. They’re the same shape and same aproximate size, but their execution is totally different. Set one next to a postwar model, and they are very noticeably a different model.
As for the more recent non-scale Lionels, they’re cast from the same mold, so look the same, but with a few minor difference. The difference that I’m speaking of is the inclusion of engineer and fireman figures in the cab of the model.
The Williams models are made to look like the postwar Lionels, and they’ve done a pretty darn good job at it.
Williams has created a great running reproduction of the post war F-3. I think it is superior to the Lionel repro post war units in price and dependability. The Lionel scale F-3s are beautiful models with a lot of great features but at a premium price.
IMO, Williams makes nice F3 recreations at a good price. They don’t have all the high tech features of Lionel but they are also more affordable. If you want simplicity of operation and good looks then Williams is a great deal. If you want remote operation and all of the control features of TMCC but at a much higher price, , then Lionel may be for you. As for pure looks, I rate both brands as excellent.
The review of the Williams Canadian Pacific passenger set on page 93 of the July 2004 issue of CTT does an excellent job of contrasting the Williams F3’s with the early Lionel models on which the WIlliams models are based. IMHO Williams really hit the nail on the head, with the primary difference of their engines having a more detailed pilot, which I happen to like. I have the NYC F3’s and I am really happy with them.
