How do I get the case of the KW transformer open?
Do you need a special tool to get the handles off?
No special tool needed. The handles will come off if you pull straight up on them. They may need a little help by prying with a screwdriver. You will also have to remove the whistle handle.
Take two fairly large screwdrivers and put one blade under each side, 180 degrees apart and get the blades in as close to the center as you can. then pay up with each blade at the same time. these things are old and do not like to be bent much.
The biggest problem with a kw is to get the two handles to not move at the same time. I had mine all fixed ,sanded the center post till it just slid in super smooth. put it back together and it worked great last spring. Now over the summer they a both moving at the same time.
I just do not care for the kw, in my opinion it is the worst one lionel made.

I put 2-3 drops of oil around the outer edge of both sides of the metal plate between the handles every time I take my KW apart. Since doing this, I haven’t had a bit of trouble with the handles moving.
I agree with Dave’s advice.
northern, everyone to his own opinion. I have two and not a bit of trouble. I think they are the best Lionel ever made. They will work fine if you treat them fine. I have one that is new that I jsut picked up this summer. One that is old as the hills but works good. Have replaced the cord [which was no problem] on the old one. I have several KWs and I like them. They have carbon rollers like a ZW, so be sure to check those and replace them if necessary. Once you get the top off, let us know if you need any more help.
