Has anyone had experience operating MTH Protosound locomotives with Lionel Legacy control system…if so what was required
Lionel does not make or use DCC. DCC is used in 2-rail systems.

Thank you for calling that to my attention…I should have said Legacy control system…I want to use the Legacy but still be able to use both Lionel and MTH locomotives.

Don Baker has both DCS and Legacy. He is the forum expert on such matters.
From what I know you can control DCS locos with Legacy but ONLY in Conventional Mode. If you want to control DCS locos you need the DCS system from MTH. Don has had success controlling TMCC and Legacy locos with the DCS hand held unit, according to Don there isn’t much you can do with the Legacy controller that you can’t do with the DCS remote.

I agree with EVERYTHING you said, except for the first sentence, an EXPERT(?) no. But, a very happy OPERATOR, just having fun!!! And loving it !!!
(I have been working on various “Operation” sequences, that I have documented all the track and equipment moves (including switching). Then when a visitor comes in I let them run with a sequence from simple to complex, using controllers ranging from the Cab-1, DCS, or Cab-2, depending upon thier skill level. So far everyone has really enjoyed it, instead of just watching me run the trains.)
Don… I qualified that by placing ‘forum’ in front of expert. [:D] I know of only one other forum member who has all three systems setup, and from my vantage point you have more experience with this setup than anyone else… so that make you the ‘forum expert’ by default. [8D]
Lionel legacy will control MTH locos in conventional mode only with the addition of a Lionel TPC unit, but not all MTH features are accessable in conventional mode. MTH’s DCS system will operate MTH locos in command control to access all of the MTH range of sound effects and features. MTH DCS will however operate a Lionel Legacy loco but only will access it in Lionel’s older cab 1mode. Ideally to get the best of both brands you need both systems but they can operate simutaniously due to the fact that Lionel Legacy sends signals through the outer rails while MTH DCS sends signals through the center rail. MTH DCS will also operate all Lionel Cab 1 command control locos with the addition of a Lionel command base.
