I am looking to purchase a Lionel legacy diesel #6- 28298 GE ac 6000 csx diesel, and i wondered if i can enjoy most of the features in conventional mode with a Mth z1000 transformer. will the quilling horn still work? I have MTH diesels and this would be my first Lionel diesel. Thanks for any comments.
The quilling horn will not work without Legacy. If you want that feature, just purchase Legacy. It is not overly expensive.

Also the Legacy speed control does not work in conventional either.
Are you sure about that? Legacy is a one-way communication system, so it cannot know how fast the engine is moving to correct the speed. I know the previous speed control system worked in conventional and I suspect the Legacy speed control works in conventional too, although I haven’t actually tried it.
The engines sound, whistle/horn (sans quillable) and bell should all work in conventional. However, you cannot trigger specific sounds, such as tower communication and cab talk.

I had my 4-6-0 Ten Wheeler over at Fife’s a couple weeks ago and it certainly did not work on his layout. He has the MTH Z4000, but that shouldn’t matter (as far as I know).
