Lionel Liberty Special

Do you know anything about this diesel locomotive? It was sold in an uncatalogued set called 1577, I think. The loco is numbered 8570. Probably made around 1976. Does it have MagnaTraction?

Thanks

Cheapie Alco, single motor from what I could find, no reference to Magne-Traction.

Tip of the hat to 3rdRailGuy for the motor note.

The engine has a single pullmore field wound motor, traction tires, manual reverse, and a single dummy coupler.

Thanks, Bob and John. That"s what I expected, but it is a nice looking train, so thought I would check.

For a single motor diesel, they run decent and are powerful. But with manual reverse and dummy coupler, they are more geared for circle running. A big bang for the buck if you can get a set in pristene condition for $75.

Ditto on the above comments, but this is not as “cheapie” of an Alco like you might be used to with 1960’s style production… it does have die-cast power truck side frames, & dual axle drive with 2 traction tires. The whole power truck assembly is far superior to the old 221/222/1055/1065 type units. It actually does run quite well and pulls it’s consist nicely.

Ditto that, My 8111 DT&I switchers has that diecast power truck and it does run well. I might swap in an E unit and real, I mean diecast operating, couplers some time

DT&I switchers. A true MPC classic. MPC must of made a zillion of those. The DT&I switcher sets were a staple in the MPC line for 4 years and sold in practically all department stores that sold trains. And like the energizer bunny, they keep going and going.

3railguy, so $75 for the train set. What would the locomotive be worth?

Doyle’s new book on MPC lists the Liberty Special Alco for $40 Excellent, $60 Like new. Doyle’s prices tend to be conservative but then no price guide is or ever will be accurate. I should of been more specific in my first post. I quoted 75 bucks for a set in nice condition with no box for running.

ADCXRob, the one I see looks to have only one traction tire - left rear. Looks like there should be one one the right rear, too. Correct?

BOTH geared wheels are intended to have traction tires… the left ones on the 8021-100 power truck on this diesel.
