Lionel - real springs in wheels

Greetings!

I’m quite new to the world of Lionel trains and have a basic question.

I purchased several boxcars over the past month and have noticed that
some have real springs on the wheels and others only have a plastic
casting of springs.

How can I tell if a certain railcar has real or fake springs when I
purchase them online? Is it according to the listing numbers?

Your best bet is to go over to the Classic Toy Trains forum. http://www.trains.com/community/forum/forum.asp?FORUM_ID=95. They deal exclusively with toy trains.

If it is a new item, you might go to www.Lionel.com and see if you can tell from there catalog pictures.

If it old stock or used, I don’t know. If you ask over on the Classic Toy Train forum of this magazine you might get a better answer.
