I have a Lionel Rock Island diesel with road numbers 2031, I believe it is from the early to mid 50s and i was wondering if anyone could give me an insight on when these were made, how rare they are, and how much money they are worth (they are not for sale)
Your engines where produced 1952 - 1954 Rare depends on condition value even thou I have the pocket guide your best way is got Ebay and to O scale trains click on advance in upper right side just right of where you fill in for your search once there click on sold then hit search it will give you what they have sold for in the past 60 days I think might only be 30.
I have the new replacement Lionel set, Great set, Here is some more on them, this is agreat site to look at what you have postwar.

thank you for the info
what did your pocket guide say cause i found the set on ebay for around 800 dollars and they looked in worse condition than mine my set is about 75- 80% condition and i have original tubular switches, track , and four way crossings.
First asking or sold for but sense you ask $70 - $250. The best way is http://www.ebay.com/sch/O-Scale/19145/i.html?_from=R40&LH_Sold=1&_udlo&_udhi&_samilow&_samihi&_sadis=15&_stpos=29129&_sop=1&_dmd=1&_ipg=200&LH_Complete=1&Brand=Lionel&_nkw=2031&_dcat=19145&rt=nc&Year=1945%252D1969
This will show you what they have sold for.
Anyone asking 800 is fishing for a sucker. Nice engines might go for 150 but that’s all I would pay.
Your right SJ, I got this A-A set of the new ones for $212.40 delivered to the house. Lionel 6-38371 Rock Island Conventional Classic Alco AA Diesel Engine Locomotives #2031 They have a much better horn.
