I recently purchased the Lionel RS-3 SOO line freight starter set at a train show. The engine was either never used or slightly used. It runs but with an issue. When I switch directions after stopping it will sometimes stick and not move. There is a wheezing/whining sound coming from the motor. I have flipped it over and examined the gears as thoroughly as I can. They do seem a little loose but maybe they are supposed to be that way. But when I try and manually move them back and forth to see where they catch it appears as though the motor’s gear is what is sticking. I really have no clue as to what is going on. I understand it is a “cheaper” engine and is not going to run as good as the goodies, but this seems a little weird for a slightly to never used engine. Can anyone help, PLEASE!!!
What is the number of the set, and what is the cab number of the locomotive?
Larry
Have you cleaned the gears? Have you put lubricant on the gears? Have you put oil on the axles? Are you running the RS-3 by itself? I have purchased 2 of the MENARDS Soo Line exclusive train sets when they were new. I have not had this problem. You might have to unscrew the shell and look inside while the power is applied if the gears are lubed.
Thank you for the quick replies. I have taken it apart again and looked closer at the gears. There is definately some slippage between the motor’s gear and the “dual” gear, at times they are barely touching. I am going to order a new one and try that first then make sure everything is properly lubricated. Trainlarry the cab # is 374
