Can this transformer run on 60 cycles?
Transformers will generally work at frequencies higher than their design frequency, so it should work. Having said that, that transformer is likely to be a very rare item as few houses were connected to 25 cycle power as most non-60Hz utilities were converted between 1930 and 1950.
N.B. I’ve wondered if Lionel and others made a transformer to run off of 25Hz and have seen references to converters for DC equipped houses.
Lionel’s Type RX transformer is not terribly common, but information thereupon is rarer than the transformer itself! Here’s a little something: POSTWAR, TRANSFORMERS – WELCOME TO CORNUCOPIA OF TOY TRAINS.
Thanks for the information. This transformer was purchased in Ontario close to the Niagara Power station that once provided 25 cycle power.
Welcome aboard Daver1! The location makes a lot of sense.
